Fort Pitt Bridge Accident – Two people lost their lives Wednesday afternoon following a devastating five-vehicle crash near Pittsburgh’s Fort Duquesne Bridge that sent an SUV careening off a bridge ramp and onto the street below. The horrifying accident shocked commuters and prompted hours-long road closures during one of the busiest traffic periods of the day.

The crash occurred shortly after 3 p.m. near the southbound Route 65 ramp leading into the city via the Fort Duquesne Bridge. According to PennDOT and Pittsburgh Public Safety officials, the collision involved five vehicles and quickly escalated into a major emergency situation after one SUV flipped over the side of the elevated roadway.

Authorities said the SUV plunged from the ramp and landed on Reedsdale Street near Acrisure Stadium on Pittsburgh’s North Side. Emergency crews rushed to the scene as debris scattered across the roadway below and traffic came to a standstill throughout the surrounding area.

Officials confirmed that the driver of the SUV died as a result of the crash. A second occupant was trapped inside the wreckage and had to be extricated using specialized rescue equipment, commonly referred to as the “jaws of life.” She was transported to a hospital in critical condition but later succumbed to her injuries, according to Pittsburgh Public Safety spokesperson Cara Cruz.

The identities of the victims have not yet been released publicly.

Despite the severity of the crash, authorities said no other injuries were reported among the remaining people involved in the multi-vehicle collision. Investigators have not yet announced what caused the crash, though officials acknowledged the violent nature of the accident suggests significant force and speed may have played a role.

Pittsburgh Police Chief Jason Lando addressed the media at the scene, calling the incident a “pretty complex” investigation and emphasizing concerns about dangerous driving behavior on the heavily traveled roadway.

“We all know it takes a pretty significant amount of speed and force to flip over a bridge deck,” Lando said while urging drivers to slow down and exercise caution.

The crash created extensive traffic issues throughout Pittsburgh during the evening commute. The Route 65 ramp into the city remained closed for hours as investigators examined evidence and crews worked to remove damaged vehicles and clear the area. Drivers experienced major delays and detours across nearby routes as traffic congestion built throughout the city.

Authorities reopened the roadway shortly before 7 p.m., but the emotional impact of the tragedy lingered long after the scene was cleared. Images from the crash site quickly spread online, leaving many residents stunned by the severity of the accident and the location where the SUV ultimately landed.

For many Pittsburgh commuters, the crash served as a stark reminder of the risks associated with speeding and aggressive driving, especially on elevated roadways and busy urban routes. Chief Lando’s comments echoed frustrations shared by many drivers who regularly travel through the corridor and witness dangerous driving behavior firsthand.

As the investigation continues, authorities are expected to review surveillance footage, witness statements, and crash evidence to determine the sequence of events leading up to the fatal collision.

In the meantime, the Pittsburgh community mourns the lives lost in the tragic accident while extending thoughts and prayers to the victims’ families during an incredibly difficult time.
